Baden bei Wien

Baden bei Wien

The origin of the city goes back to the Romans who were the first to enjoy Baden’s sulphurous mineral springs. Later, Baden became a favorite of Austrian emperors who would come from Vienna to enjoy a bath in the hot healing waters. Today, visitors appreciate the many historic buildings, monuments and picnic areas in beautiful parks around the city. Connoisseurs of classical music can follow in the footsteps of Baden’s most famous visitor, Ludwig van Beethoven, who visited Baden numerous times. The sulfuric water springs also attracted a number of other artists and prominent people in the 19th century amongst them Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss I, Joseph Lanner (Steyrische Tänze [Styrian Dances], Op. 165), Franz Grillparzer and Ferdinand Raimund.

Casino Baden

From a historic standpoint the Casino Baden is also rather special because it is located in the former Spa house, which was built in 1886 and stands on historic grounds. Here the Roman spring, the oldest thermal spring of Baden springs, was used back in the antique empire as a spa and bathing house. Since 1995 the listed building has been used as a casino and conference centre and is now home to the largest casino in Europe.
